Simulation & Practical Skills Training
Simulation is available to all local acute & emergency medicine clinicians and is typically run weekly by our education team. It is an opportunity to learn, and can be used to complete a DOPS or Mini-CEX (request when booking).
Bookable sessions are available every Wednesday from 9am-12pm. You can book into 1 simulation and will be allowed 1 hour off of the shopfloor to attend.
We run scenarios that are common presentations to the ED. People usually worry about simulation, but this is just for your own education benefit. This is NOT a test!
Simulations take place in the ED Education Centre – the portable cabin outside the paediatrics ambulance entrance. If there is a change of venue for any reason we will contact you.
Occasionally, pressure on the department means that and simulation cannot be conducted. We will either try to provide another form of education but it may be necessary to cancel the session on the day. If this is the case, we will contact you as soon as possible.
How it works
Book your session using the form above.
Prior to your simulation, we will talk you through our SimMan and what it is and isn’t capable of so you know what to expect during the simulation.
You will be expected to be yourself and act within the capabilities of your medical role. If you feel you need help – just ask.
Treat SimMan as a real patient – he will talk to you!
Simulations are run in real-time as with a real patient. There is no ‘fast-forwarding’ as with many life support courses. If a procedure would take 10 minutes in real life, expect it to take 10 minutes in the sim.
You can send us a DOPS or Mini-CEX assessment to complete based on the simulation. (NB: for CT3 ED trainees – the cardiac arrest and trauma assessments will not be able to be done as simulation. They can add to evidence, but you will need an assessment on real patients for these curriculum items.)
